Harman Singh became the Executive Director of the Sikh Coalition, the largest Sikh civil rights organization in the United States, in May 2024. As executive director, Harman manages the day-to-day operations of the Sikh Coalition and is responsible for shaping and implementing the organization’s strategic plan as we enter our third decade of work on behalf of the Sikh community.

Before becoming Executive Director, Harman served as the Policy & Education Director of the Sikh Coalition. On the policy front, he managed legislative and executive advocacy at the state and federal levels around measures to combat hate crimes, transnational repression, school bullying, workplace discrimination, and racial profiling. In terms of education, he worked to advance the Sikh Coalition’s multi-year advocacy in the area of state standards curricula to ensure that classrooms are more inclusive and that Sikhi is taught appropriately and accurately in public schools across the United States.

Harman spent seven years working in higher education as a PhD Program Coordinator & Academic Auditor at the University of Michigan and as an Academic Advisor at Wayne State University. Harman’s work primarily centered on equity in education, as he developed programs geared towards first-generation college students and students of color. Harman was recognized as a “Champion of Diversity and Inclusion” for the creation of innovative internship programs for students of color, and a “Program Assessment Award” for modeling how to improve students’ learning and programs through data-informed decisions. He previously served as a Board Member for the Wayne State University Alumni Association, facilitating career and graduate school opportunities for students.

Harman also co-founded Seva4Everybody, a grassroots organization that focuses on basic needs support for residents of Detroit and mentorship for Sikh youth. The organization holds Seva events and provides support to community organizations in Detroit, and was recognized by the City of Detroit for service to the community in 2023.
