Vishavjit Singh is a New York City based illustrator, writer, performance artist, diversity speaker and creator of http://www.Sikhtoons.com. With professional background in public health (epidemiology/biostatistics) and technology, he got his spark for cartooning in the post 9/11 tragedy when Americans with turbaned and bearded countenance became targets of hate/bias crimes. He has traveled across the nation with his performance art (Sikh Captain America) persona armed with turban, beard & humor to tackle fear, bigotry & intolerance. He uses storytelling as a tool to create a space for challenging conversations around identity, race, bias and being agents for change. He hosts talks & keynotes in schools, universities, government agencies and companies including Google, Apple, NASA, NYC Department of Health & Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus. During Covid pandemic he worked as a public health supervisor managing a team of contact tracers as part of New York Health + Hospitals. He is the subject of a widely acclaimed documentary films, ‘Red, White & Beard’ and ‘Drawn Together: Comics, Diversity and Stereotypes’. Most recently, he served as the co-creator of the award winning animated short film American Sikh, which became the first film with a Sikh Director to qualify for an Oscar in 2024 and won the Webby Award for best animation in 2025. He has been featured in many books about changemakers and activists including, We Are Here curated by the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center. He is currently working in the Office of Diversity and Inclusion in FDNY. His message and work has been covered by a number of news outlets, including the New York Times, NPR, BBC, The Atlantic, Huffington Post, The Guardian and Time Magazine.
